While there are many divorce mediation goals to consider, here are some that you should keep in mind at all times:

  • To create an equitable divorce agreement that both individuals can live with
  • To create a legally sound divorce agreement
  • To avoid the expense and stress that goes along with litigation
  • To minimize bad feelings
  • To work through a variety of issues, including those related to property division, child custody and child support

There is no way of knowing exactly what will happen during divorce mediation, but you should be able to attack the process with a clear mind if you know the goals that you want to accomplish along the way.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you close in on divorce mediation:

  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • Do you know the areas in which you may have to compromise?
  • What’s the best way to tackle the process?
  • Are there any challenges that are sure to come up along the way?

There is no way of knowing for sure what will happen during divorce mediation, so you should plan for anything that could come your way. Although this is typically less stressful than litigation, it doesn’t mean you will never face challenges.

As long as you understand the finer details of divorce mediation and your legal rights at every turn of the road, you can continue to make decisions that will put you in good position to put your relationship in the past once and for all.
