Should you wait to divorce?

Many people press straight ahead with filing for a divorce as soon as they have decided the marriage is over. Some don’t even wait to tell their spouse of their decision.

Sometimes, moving quickly is the right course of action. However, sometimes, it can be better to hold off for a while. Here are some examples of when waiting might make sense.

If you need to build up some savings

Divorce will likely place a huge financial strain on both of you. Maybe you decide that you cannot afford to get divorced just yet and will wait until you can each leave in a more stable financial position. Or, perhaps you want to divorce but have not told your spouse yet as you prefer to save up a pot of money so you can move out as soon as you tell them.

If it is better for the children

Some parents wait until their children have finished school before divorcing. They fear that moving ahead with the divorce before them could distract the child from getting good grades. Others believe it better to wait until the children are older, thinking it will be less confusing or harmful for them then.

Sometimes, delaying can be better for the children, but it’s not necessarily so. If the marriage is full of conflict, or if delaying leads to it becoming that way, then this could disadvantage the children far more than splitting up would. Seeing their parents fighting is not good for any child.

You aren’t sure about the process

Another possible reason for delaying filing is that you realize you don’t know much about how a divorce will work. Taking time to learn more about your rights and obligations and how the state views things, such as property division and time with the children, could be wise. It may be better to learn these things while everything is relatively calm than amid the stress and upheaval that filing for divorce could generate.
