Social media mistakes to avoid during divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2025 | Divorce

People who are going through a divorce will quickly realize that this life change affects every aspect of their lives. This includes what they do on social media websites, at least during the divorce proceedings.

Some individuals may opt to get off social media completely during the divorce. This is often a good idea, particularly if the divorce is contentious. If you decide that staying on social media is necessary, remember not to make any of these mistakes.

Mistake 1: Badmouthing your ex

Never badmouth your ex on social media. Everything you say about them might be used in court against you. It’s especially important in cases that involve child custody because negative remarks might be considered signs of you trying to alienate your ex from your children.

Mistake 2: Posting things that might be misconstrued

Never post anything that might be misconstrued. Even things that seem innocent might be taken negatively during a divorce. For example, posting about a vacation may seem innocent, but your ex may construe that to mean that you have assets that you didn’t disclose.

Mistake 3: Thinking things can be completely deleted

Never assume that something you delete will be gone forever. People can take screenshots, so even things you think aren’t available any longer may have been recorded already. This leaves the possibility of your ex obtaining a copy of the post you deleted.

Social media usage during divorce is only one thing you have to think about when you’re going through a divorce. Working with someone who’s familiar with these matters may be beneficial so you can protect your interests.
